Virtual Book Discussion: Automating Inequality

Join peers in philanthropy for a book discussion focused on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. This month, we will be reading Virginia Eubanks's 2017 book Automating Inequality: How High-tech Tools Profile, Police and Punish the Poor. Eubanks's book sheds light on the way that statistical models, algorithms, and automation in our technology are setup to perpetuate income inequality. Participants in this session are expected to read the book in advance, and discussion will be guided by a set of questions to encourage open and honest dialog about the topics and scenarios in the book.

Participants are encouraged to acquire the book from their local library, or purchase from an independent bookstore. Use indiebound.org to locate an independent bookstore near you.

Book Discussion Hosts:

  • Wendye Mingo, Managing Director of Information Technology at The Kresge Foundation
  • Autumn Patterson, IT Strategy & Solutions Manager at Northwest Area Foundation
  • Ann Puckett, IT Manager at Grand Rapids Community Foundation

All current TAG members are welcome to join. This meeting will NOT be recorded.
