Real-World Data Integration: Flexible Strategies for Your Entire Organization from Excel to Data Warehouses

Everyone is talking about data integration these days. Development staff are using Razor’s Edge, finance staff are using Quickbooks, and your grants management staff is using Fluxx. You can’t put all that in one system, but sometimes you need to ask questions that can only be answered by pulling data from multiple sources.

For example, how many volunteers are also donors? How many people are served by our grantees across different program areas or communities? Sometimes straightforward questions about outcomes (how many children are reading on grade level?) requires program information from a program database, as well as data from the school system. Combining data from different sources is challenging but oh so rewarding.

In this webinar, we will talk about how to create data strategies and practices that are essential to data integration, whether you are managing multiple databases or multiple excel spreadsheets. Then for the real nerds we will talk about the challenges of combining data from systems you don’t manage, and will explain more about open APIs, data warehouses, and data lakes. (Spoiler alert, your fancy data warehouse won’t do much if you don’t have a clear strategy about what you collect, and good data hygiene to make sure data is clean and complete.)

Speakers:

  • Dr. Taj Carson is the CEO and Founder of Inciter. Inciter is the home of Incite, a cloud-based, software-as-a-service platform designed to enter, store, and create reports on data and program activities for social sector organizations. Inciter is a firm that specializes in using research, data analysis and data systems to help organizations raise awareness, raise funds, and tell the story of their impact. Dr. Carson has more than 20 years’ experience working in research and evaluation, and 8 years of experience in the technology field. She received a Master’s degree in Information Visualization from the Maryland Institute College of Art in 20015, a certificate in technology entrepreneurship from the University of Maryland-Baltimore County in 2010, and before that a Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Delaware in 2000. With all this, it may not seem like she has much free time, but when she can, she makes time for the things she enjoys, like cycling, rowing and practicing her Spanish (preferably in foreign countries). And sometimes for fun, Taj swims with sharks, and people she wishes would get eaten by sharks.
  • Jacob S. J. Joseph, MPS is a solutions architect and developer. He has architected, developed and managed multiple data management solutions in multiple industries including higher education, K-12, manufacturing, entertainment, and retail. He received an M.P.S. in Information  Visualization in 2015 and specializes in data modeling, extract-transform-load (ETL) automation, systems integrations, interactive web visualizations, and sustainable data systems.
