July Meeting: Knowledge Management Best Practices for Grantmakers
Effective knowledge management (KM) in philanthropy is emerging as a critical strategy—not just for efficiency, but for mission clarity and long-term impact.
Join this members-only office hours session to explore how philanthropic organizations can begin or refine their KM journey. Through practical examples and peer insights, TAG members will break down three core KM areas—process documentation, data usefulness, and feedback loops. Whether you're centralizing knowledge for the first time or evolving an existing approach, this session offers a roadmap for building KM practices that last.
TAG encourages all attendees to bring a KM example related to process documentation, data usefulness, or feedback loops to share and discuss during the session (see definitions of each KM type below).
KM Core Area Definitions:
- Process Documentation captures how work gets done to ensure clarity, consistency, and continuity across teams.
- Data Usefulness refers to data that is made meaningful and actionable by structuring it for easy access, interpretation, and application.
- Feedback Loops create systems to gather and respond to input, turning insights into better decisions and stronger practices.
Key Takeaways Include:
Understand what KM looks like in practice for philanthropy.
Identify key questions to ask when building or evolving KM efforts.
Explore tools and systems that support documentation, data use, and continuous feedback.
Session Facilitators:
Becky Thatcher Baer, Learning & Evaluation Associate at The Heinz Endowments
