TAG Launches Survey to Assess Feasibility of Central Repository for Common Application Data

As a member of the philanthropic sector we share a common bond of applicants and grant applications. The Board of the Technology Affinity Group (TAG) believes that TAG could provide a valuable service to the community by investigating the feasibility of creating a central repository for grant applicants to store and manage the common information collected by funders during the application process. This central repository could be utilized by funders' grant application processes if the grant application process includes the ability to pull data from the central repository, including information about the applicant's organization, contacts and organizational documents.

Creating a central repository and adopting grant application processes is a very large effort but it is one that we feel is achievable if we take small steps to move the process forward.

The TAG Board has asked us to start the effort by preparing a simple survey to determine what portion of the grant application is common to our sector. From there we can start to determine what is common to our grant applications.

Why a Central Repository?

If the applicants could store and manage information in a central location and import it to their grant application, data entry duplication would be eliminated and application data would be current. This ability to streamline the grant application process is one of the original suggestions from Project Streamline, .

How are we going to move this idea forward?

A simple survey asking you to check off what common data elements you ask for in your grant application. This is not a survey on data standards for reporting which would be much more complex. This is a survey of just the basic kinds of information, like contact information, financial documents, and other items we believe most foundations request.

Please forward this email to the person most knowledgeable about the application process in your foundation. Even if your current grant application is not online or automated it is important for us to understand what information you ask for so we can determine what data is common across all foundations.
