Virtual Book Discussion on Bias & Technology

Include equity on your summer reading list and plan to join peers in philanthropy for a book discussion in mid-September.

This summer, we will be reading one of two books on bias in technology. Participants are encouraged to read one of the two books selected and be prepared for thought-provoking discussion on the ways systems increase oppression and perpetuate racism in society. Discussion will be guided by a set of questions to encourage open and honest dialog about the topics and scenarios in the book.

  • Algorithms of Oppression: How Search Engines Reinforce Racism by Safiya Umoja Noble
  • Technically Wrong: Sexist Apps, Biased Algorithms, and Other Threats of Toxic Tech by Sara Wachter-Boettcher

Participants are encouraged to acquire the book from their local library, or purchase from an independent bookstore. Use indiebound.org to locate an independent bookstore near you.

Book Discussion Hosts:

  • Nadia Alia, Director of Operations, The Tow Foundation
  • Hugo Castro, Director of Operations, Groundwork Collaborative

All current TAG members are welcome to join. This meeting will NOT be recorded.
