Philanthropy In/Sight: A New Mapping Tool to Boost Grantmaker Effectiveness

TAG, via the generosity of the Foundation Center, will offerfree access toTAG members to the Foundation Center'snew online mapping tool, Philanthropy In/Sight.

Philanthropy In/Sight is a one-of-a-kind data visualization platform designed to help grantmakers understand the impact of their grants around the world or in their local communities. It enables users to create maps that show where philanthropy has made an impact and where the need for funding is greatest. In these challenging times, foundations need to be even more strategic about the allocation of their funding resources. And whether that means identifying particular geographic areas that need support, nonprofits that are making a difference, or potential funding partners, In/Sight can help.

With In/Sight's customized Google maps, your members can combine the Foundation Center's in-depth data, updated weekly, on over 97,000 grantmakers and more than 1.7 million grants with a vast array of demographic and socio-economic indicators in categories such as education, income, the environment, and health. For instance, you can create maps that show the impact of funding for employment combined with data about the unemployment rate. View example.

In/Sight users can also open "pins" on the maps for details about funders, recipients, and grants; display giving geographically by country, state, county, city, metro area, congressional district, or zip code; choose from 26 fields of interest and 1,100 specialty areas; and view maps with aggregated grantmaker and grants data to explore emerging trends.

The free access is made possible through support from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation and the Ford Foundation for ongoing development and improvement of In/Sight. As your members use this new mapping tool, we welcome any feedback that will help us shape its future development and make it even more valuable for their work.

Access will be available through TAG's web site within the next few weeks. Stay tuned for more details!
