TAG Changes Survey Strategy and Releases “What Do You Use” Survey Results Summary

In September 2015, TAG conducted a quick mini-survey to find out what software, products and services foundations use for a range of things from grants management systems to web conferencing. The TAG survey committee is proposing to run two to three quick, easy surveys a year to keep TAG members current on what their peers are doing instead of a long, comprehensive survey every few years. This is the first survey in this quick, short format.

The survey was conducted using www.surveymonkey.com and was comprised of 25 multiple choice questions. Foundations that participate in these surveys will receive a detailed report showing the responses of their peers. This will enable respondents to contact foundation peers about their experiences with the products and services they use. All TAG members will receive a summary report as a benefit of TAG membership but TAG survey reports will no longer be shared publicly.

99 foundations participated in the survey, with participants primarily from independent foundations (41%), community foundations (24%) and family foundations (19%). A third of respondents were foundations with more than $1 billion in assets, another third were foundations with assets between $250 million and $1 billion and the remaining foundations were below $250 million.

Some highlights from the survey results include:

  • Almost 40% have moved their Office suite to the cloud.
  • 27% reported they plan to use MicroEdge Gifts as the foundation’s grants management software or service in 2016, followed by 17% who plan to use Fluxx and 10% who plan to use RoundCorner FoundationConnect.
  • Only 14% of foundations will NOT have an online grant application in 2016.
  • Dropbox is the most commonly used product for collaborative document and file sharing services (50%) and is second (27%) to Microsoft OneDrive (33%) for cloud storage.
  • Voice over IP is the most common telecommunications platform.

A summary of the survey results is available for TAG members. Please keep this information confidential within TAG.
